Fighting Anxiety With Worry Yes, Really.
Fighting Anxiety With Worry Yes, Really. Stress, anxiety, worry. Theyre all bad, right? As it turns out, worry, done right, is actually our friend. Yes, it seems to be that pretty much all of us get a PhD in worry about the same time that we leave the protective shelter of our parents homes. After all, there are bills that have to be paid. Then there are the relationships you have to deal with. And finding (and getting . . . and keeping) that job you like. And . . . Im sure that all sounds familiar. Hey, there have been moments when I said, I wish I could just be a selfish jerk who doesnt care or worry about anything. But, reality is that I neither want nor am capable of that. So, whats the alternative? How about learning to use and manage worry in a whole new way? What if you enlisted worry to be your friend? What if worry could help you be more consciously productive and effective? Here are some simple tips to accomplish that. Harnessing Worry According to Reid Wilson, Ph.D., worry is simply an alert mechanism. Like an warning light. But the key is that its not a red warning light. You dont have to panic. When a worry thought comes around, the first response should be to question it. Is it based in reality? Or, is it imagination running amok? Sometimes, the worry is a legitimate signal that something may be wrong. For example, your child is two hours late coming home. Sometimes, it may be just noise. Noise is what you hear when theres a bad storm and youre expecting someone to arrive. Theyre not late, you have no valid reason to worry, but the what ifs start. What if the road is really bad? What if theres an accident? Theres no basis in reality, just vague dramatized speculation. Obviously, worry is a useful tool when it alerts you to a real concern. Your kid is very late, and some basic checking is probably in order. Call their cellphone, or their friends house where they were supposed to be. Get facts. In using this logical response behavior, youre using worry to head off anxiety. If the worry is valid, youre doing something to resolve the situation. If the worry is just noise, you can label it as such and dismiss it. To summarize, the key steps are: Distinguish between important signals and irrelevant noise Take action on valid signals instead of allowing the worry to move into anxiety level Dismiss the noise pay no attention to useless, unhelpful, and unfounded worry thoughts Worry is just a signal to do something solve a real problem. Its ugly brother, anxiety, wants you to dwell on the worry instead of engage in problem solving. Using the above simple technique will keep anxiety in check and all those worry lines off your forehead. If you have more well-ingrained habit of worry and anxiety, you may want to check out Stopping The Noise In Your Head, by Reid Wilson. Its an in-depth course in dealing with worry and anxiety that will take you on a journey to becoming free of the bonds of anxiety. And even if youre just a common, everyday worrier, itll make handling day-to-day drama a whole lot easier. You can find it here. Images: Worry Giorgio Montersino Worrying Heroic Journey

What Successful People Read that You Dont - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
What Successful People Read that You Donât - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I was finalizing a purchase with a new company this weekend and because it was a new vendor, I had to complete the deal by registering on the companys website. The sales representative was charming and extraordinarily knowledgeable throughout the entire negotiation, so it didnât surprise me when she wanted to coach me through this last âmile.â We sat together while I completed some forms online. When the website wouldnât take capital letters and persisted in translating everything I input to lower case, I laughed and said, âWow, your company will think youâre doing business with e.e. cummings.â âNo, we donât do business with an e.e. cummings, â she replied. âAt least not in my territory. Because I am both an educator at UCLA Extension and a working MBA, my heart sank a bit. I know we teach you sales, business, accounting, marketing, operations, human resources, manufacturing, and then some in business school. But if thatâs really all you know, we have failed you by graduating you. The most successful business people read. They read way beyond their business field. They consume poetry, fiction, science, philosophy, science fiction, science fantasy, religion, psychology and then some. Without these references, you are doomed to lose prestige when your product knowledge is no longer at issue. We may have done you a real disservice if you have an undergraduate business degree. Consider whether you have an education deficit, which is more of a liability than you might think. Consider what subject areas would expand your point of view, like anthropology, fine arts, sociology, physical science, biology, mathematics, linguistics, political science and the whole host of topics that enliven the world with different perspectives. You can be an autodidact, a MOOC-addict or at least a casual reader in these other fields. However, nothing comes close to being engaged by a teacher or mentor who is dedicated to challenging you on a new subject. Successful people actively widen or deepen the shallow areas of their education. They never stop learning â" really learning, not just apprising themselves of a topic with a Buzzfeed style list. Read and learn to get a richer framework for life, and life brings you greater riches.

Spit That Out Going Green and Staying Sane
Spit That Out Going Green and Staying Sane The following is a guest post by Paige Wolf. Her bio follows. From BPA in plastics and asbestos in crayons to misleading natural labelsâ"it can despair even the most conscientious consumer. But it is possible to make green and healthy living a regular part of your lifestyle without breaking the bank and going insane. Here are a few simple tips: Create a plan for saving and splurging that evens out your budget. For instance, you may want to pay more for an organic mattress but save on cheap organic sheets from Target and a secondhand bedframe. My family saves a ton of money by getting the vast majority of our clothing secondhand, which allows us to spend more on organic food staples. Yerdle.com and local Buy Nothing Project Groups are treasure troves for free items! Organic Foods When it comes to organic food, start with the items your family eats the most and the items most likely to contain chemicals of concern. The Environmental Working Group releases annual lists of the âDirty Dozen and Clean Fifteenâ â" the fruits and vegetables most and least likely to contain pesticides. You can download a handy app to keep track, and youâll usually notice that apples, berries, and stone fruits like peaches tend to top the dirty list. Itâs also a good idea to go organic with anything where you eat the skin. Notice that avocado, kiwis, and pineapple are on the low pesticide risk list, partly because youâll be removing that inedible rind where much of the nasty stuff lives. Get rid of anything with a strong fragrance or chemical smell. Its a likely sign of endocrine-disrupting phthalates. Common culprits: plastic shower curtains, plug-in air fresheners, and most scented candles. Also try to pare down non-stick cookware and plastic from your kitchen. Donât put heated food in plastic â" in fact, donât heat plastic, period. Shop retailers that do the research for you. Check out the wide variety of online shopping hubs that specialize in eco-friendly and healthy goods. Each retailer has its own set of standards, but they are certainly good places to start for better products. For various needs, visit com, rodales.com, luckyvitamin.com, thrivemarket.com, mightynest.com, and greendepot.com. And donât miss the sales and coupon codes! Use your voice to enact political change that will make a difference on a larger scale. Vote for candidates with strong environmental initiatives. Write letters and send e-mails, from complaints about your school districtâs lack of recycling to petitions to the federal government. Get things off your chest and use your voice to feel empowered. Lead by example. We canât control the world around us, but we can control what we do in our own space. It can be hard when you have close friends and family who arenât sympathetic to your eco-consciousness. Try to reward their positive behavior, telling them how clever and environmentally savvy they are! Pat yourself on the back. Remember that perfect is an unattainable goal, and everything you can do makes a difference. About Paige Wolf Paige Wolf is a publicist, author, and green living expert who uses her media savvy and personal moxie to promote manageable eco-chic living. Paige is the author of Spit That Out! The Overly Informed Parents Guide to Raising Healthy Kids in the Age of Environmental Guilt and the owner of Paige Wolf Media and Public Relations, a B Corporation certified eco-friendly PR firm focused on sustainable clientele. 4 Things to Know Before Quitting Your Job to Follow Your Dreams
4 Things to Know Before Quitting Your Job to Follow Your Dreams Photo Credit â" Idealistcareers.orgSure, you might have forgotten about your career and gotten a job, but when that no longer satisfies you donât just give up on it. Yes, there is an immediate temptation to quit and just get on with it. Resist that urge. You see, the problem with just quitting before you have something else lined up is that you canât be certain that there will be something one two three. You might, in fact, find yourself looking for that dream job for longer than you can actually afford. When that happens, youâll be forced to choose yet another job that doesnât satisfy you. And then youâre once again stuck So, instead of just cutting the knot, why not make sure that youâve got all your ducks in order first? What ducks am I talking about? What is your dream?evalIt seems like a straightforward question. It isnât. Most people spend all of their lives trying to figure out what their dreams are. The trick, Iâve found, is not to try to find your lifeâs goal . Thatâs nearly impossible, probably in large part because life is made of many goals rather than just one.Instead, focus on what you want to do right now. You donât have to do it forever. You donât have to commit to a lifetime of only doing that thing. Just commit to it until youâre satisfied.Another thing to consider is that youâre not confusing one goal for another. For example, a lot of people want well-paying jobs because they believe it will make them happier. Not only is that not true, it is also a matter of focusing on the wrong thing. Why focus on money when you can focus straight on ways to make yourself happier? Wouldnât that be more effective than going after something that might not actually make a difference?Become better at the skills you need to pursue your dreamsNot every skill can be learned while youâre doing another job. Some, however, can. For example, if you want to be a musician, perhaps spend some time getting better at making music before you g ive up your day job.Sure, you might plateau after a while and not get any better without actually plunging in, but until you reach that point, take it slow. Get better. For once youâre doing something as a living, thereâs often rarely time to reflect and philosophically consider how you can improve what youâre doing as youâre simply too close to the thing. Is your resume ready?evalWhile youâre still working at another place, you might as well get your resume in order. After all, once youâre back on the job market thatâs your calling card, your marketing campaign and your history all rolled into one.So give it the time it deserves. Hone it. Put it aside for a week then come back to it so that you can see if youâve made any mistakes which you read over the last time.Even better, get other people involved. Know anybody with an eagle-eye for detail? Ask them to look at it. Just make sure that theyâre not your colleagues, otherwise, your boss might find out before itâs time While youâre at it, make sure youâre ready for the interview as well. After all, only getting your foot in the door for your dream job isnât enough. You want the whole deal!Have you left a good impression? The problem with throwing in the towel at your current place of employment is that you might leave a lot of people in the lurch. Donât do that. You never know how useful those people might be to you.For example, your dream might fail and you might have to go back. Yes, that sounds unappetizing, but just because itâs not something youâd like to happen, you shouldnât make sure it canât happen. So, make sure that you tie up your loose ends, that your ship is in order and that the people youâre working with are left with a smile on their face when you walk away Donât take what youâre doing for granted. Yes, I know, itâs a drag. But not everything can be rainbows and the sunshine. So make sure that before you call it quits, youâve done your homework and you âre sure to end up on top.Youâll thank yourself for the preparation. For regret is a truly ugly thing.Of course, that works both ways. Donât slow yourself down so much that you donât actually end up doing anything. For ultimately those things that we donât do fill us with far more regret than those things we do try but fail at doing. So do take the plunge. Just make sure you tested the water first.

How Can Corporate Social Responsibility Help a Business - CareerAlley
How Can Corporate Social Responsibility Help a Business - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Corporate Social Responsibility represents an important part of a business strategy. CSR Jobs typically involve ensuring that a company is compliant with various ethical demands, and that they exercise a wide range of philanthropic and self regulatory tasks. An important part of this strategy is to ensure that a company is able to avoid unethical practices, while being able to support local communities. Moreover, companies need to be able to provide a positive working environment for staff, and to generate a positive image for investment. Doing so can have many benefits for a business. Brand Distinction CSR provides a business with a positive brand identity, and can allow it to stand out compared to competition. Promoting a brands ethical responsibilities, and managing any potential crisis through PR before it can develop, means that a company has the potential to retain trust from customers and stakeholders, while also being able to attract top level graduates. Having this integrity as part of the brand culture of a company can also help to promote best practices throughout different areas of work. Local Impact CSR can also be practiced by focusing on a local community, whether that be where the main operations of a business is located, or through local areas around different branches. This investment can be achieved by spending money on sponsoring local sports teams and festivals, and by holding local specific giveaways and competitions. At the same time, efforts can be made to support local employment by attempting to hire from within the community. Having this local impact can help to foster good business relations within a community, and a positive image with customers. Environmental Strengths A company can also benefit from CSR policies that focus on environmental compliance. This compliance might take the form of having a strict recycling policy, as well as a push to use alternative and renewable energy sources within operations. As well as saving money for a company in the long run, eco led policies can also lead to increased customer loyalty, and can attract eco friendly partners for collaboration and investment. Lower Risk A CSR policy that shows responsibility for a companys staff can help to build a better work environment, and can focus on investment in health and safety measures. This may be developed through ensuring that corners arent cut when it comes to safety equipment, and through the funding of safety training. Reducing risk in the workplace can also be thought of here as reducing the potential damage of negative publicity for accidents, and can also lower the damage of regulations and fines. Attracting Investment A company with a strong CSR policy, and staff members that adhere to and promote its values, can ultimately attract investment from domestic and foreign companies. Again, CSR indicates a level of trust that can set a company apart within the business community, and can particularly demonstrate a resistance to the kind of unethical practices that have more recently damaged the reputation of many companies during the economic recession.
